Messix EP

Ocobaya

Messix EP: the debut from Ocobaya, the DC duo behind Protect-U. Four transmissions from the threshold of the mechanical and the ecstatic, on 1432 R.

The Messix EP is the debut from Ocobaya, the project of the Washington, D.C. duo Mike Petillo and Aaron Leitko, better known as Protect-U on the Future Times label. Four transmissions from the threshold between the mechanical and the ecstatic.

These are songs built from sustained tension: structure against accident, repetition against surprise, dance-floor utility against private reverie. The result feels engineered and discovered at the same time, as if the music had been waiting inside the machines all along and the duo only switched them on. Adult Parking turns the dullest civic phrase into something faintly menacing, the way a fluorescent-lit garage at night becomes a stage set with no play. Rhythms surface out of static with clear purpose and then dissolve back into a nameless haze, a signal that keeps almost becoming a voice. Here the pleasure and the experiment stop pretending to be opposites.
