In My Sleep EP

Ethiopian Records

Ethiopian Records' third on 1432 R, In My Sleep gathers a decade of work: jungle, hip hop, house and Ethiopian folk in harmony.

In My Sleep is the third 1432 R release from Ethiopian Records, and it gathers close to a decade of work by the Addis Ababa producer Endeguena Mulu. The palette is wide: hints of jungle, hip hop and house threaded through Ethiopian folk, drawing on the sun, on Ethiopian war hymns, and on his own dreams.

Mulu is a principal architect of Ethiopiyawi Electronic, and across these long tracks, one of them runs nearly twelve minutes, you hear what a decade of patience buys. War hymns are music written to march people toward death; slowed and turned inward here, they aim instead at sleep. The rhythms move like a procession glimpsed from a train window, ceremonial, purposeful, gone before you work out what was being carried. Jungle breakbeats flicker beneath folk melody the way a second language surfaces in a dream you did not know you still spoke.

Mastered by Dietrich Schoenemann at Complete Mastering in Connecticut. Released February 2016 on 1432 R.
